On February 6, 2025, the Danwadaag Consortium, MoPIED, and ReDSS organized a learning event in Mogadishu, Nairobi, and virtually, bringing together stakeholders to discuss durable solutions in Somalia. Keynote speakers included Manuel Marques Pereira (IOM) and Zahra Abdi (MoPIED). Presentations covered the Durable Solutions Progress Survey (DSP), the derisnimo approach in Mogadishu, and urban growth in Garowe. The DSP, developed by the Somali government, measures progress towards sustainable reintegration of displaced persons. The derisnimo approach targets neighborhoods holistically, reducing community tensions. Garowe’s urban expansion integrates displaced communities into planned areas, addressing challenges like informal settlements and eviction threats.
Group discussions led to recommendations on strengthening multi-stakeholder collaboration, designing referral pathways, utilizing data for policymaking, integrating grassroots perspectives, standardizing area-based approaches, and promoting gender equality and social inclusion. Key observations included the need for a common agenda, investment in existing structures, private sector engagement, breaking sectoral silos, inclusive decision-making, harmonized referral pathways, and meaningful community participation. The event concluded with themes emphasizing evidence-based, people-centered approaches and government leadership for sustainable integration of displaced communities.
